Thomas and my anniversary is December 26th, but since it’s the day after Christmas we normally celebrate it on our halfer-anniversary (June 26th). Nevertheless we always do dinner and cards to recognize the day we met, but nothing huge. He had asked me if we should do dinner before his parents come into town, which I thought was a great idea. He said he would take it into his hands and plan the date. I should have known something was up by that comment alone!
Side note: His parents and brother were coming into town on the 23rd and the plan was to spend a night at our place and then drive down to SD to spend Christmas with both families.
Thomas had down played this date constantly throughout the week. I had Friday off, and I had no plans of working that day, but he was talking about working all day on Friday and wearing jeans to our dinner. I was starting to really get down on this date and not that excited. (Later Thomas admitted he down-played it too much)
Thursday night (22nd) rolls around, and I get home early to get ready. People at work were talking in my ear that it’s going to happen, but my thoughts were to get ready regardless. Either way it’s a celebration! The night before I had received a Brazilian blowout and I wasn’t allowed to wash my hair for three days, which kind of sucked because it looked greasy. However it did make it easier to get ready. I asked him what I should wear and he said something warm. Well that threw me for a huge loop!
My mind was racing! Where were we going that required warm clothes? We wouldn’t have dinner on the beach because the sand would get everywhere and it really would be freezing, so the only logical idea was we were going on a boat! He picks me up at home with flowers (red roses) in hand and asks me if I am ready to go. We get into the car and ask where we are heading. He tells me we are going to Splashes restaurant at the Surf and Sand Hotel in Laguna. I was totally blind-sided. I told him that I thought we were going on a boat and he started laughing. Secretly in my mind I thought he might be throwing me off and we are still heading for that luminous boat!
We arrive at the Surf and Sand hotel and start walking to the restaurant. We get up to the host where I am looking to see if they recognize each other, and he asks us if we want inside or out. They definitely don’t know each other and there is no table set up for us (another downer). I choose outside and notice there is no one in the restaurant. Our waitress comes out and is not friendly at all. I steal a candle from the table next to us (where it obviously isn’t being used) to read the menu, but she proceeds to tell us if that table is seated, there is only one candle per table, and she will need it back. Bitch!
Our food arrives and it is just ok. We are laughing because of course this stuff happens to us, but we always have a good time no matter what! I have the pasta and he has a steak with a side of bone marrow (the marrow is STILL IN THE BONE). We finish our meals, which usually leads to us exchanging cards. I have my card for him on the table and he is staring at it. I ask him to open it and when he is done reading there is an awkward silence. With all this “down-playing” all week, I ask for my card. He said he forgot to get one. My eyes start to well up, and he quickly jumps up to “take a walk on the beach.” I am so confused at this point. We try to make our way down to the beach, which is right outside the restaurant, but the “friendly” waitress said we can’t leave unless we leave a credit card.
Thomas and I make our way down to the water, where there is a big spotlight on the beach. We start to kiss and I feel self-conscious because we are that "PDA couple" in a bright spotlight where people from the restaurant (whom I can’t see because I am blinded) are watching. I try to scoot out of the light, but he keeps pushing me back into it. We are talking and then I see Thomas’s eyes gaze off to my left. There is a child standing next to us. He couldn’t be older than 5, but he is enjoying playing in our shadows. Thomas brings me back to him, he starts talking and grabs for something in his pocket. That’s when he gets down on one knee and proposes. I was so shocked and thrown off, that I didn’t know what to say. Of course I said yes! At that same minute, we hear the mother of the kid yell for him to get back there, people clapping, and one guy yell, “enjoy it while it lasts!”
Thomas pays the bill and we leave the restaurant. At that point every emotion is going through me. I am crying, then laughing, then nervous, and then back to crying! I couldn’t believe I was engaged! I wanted to call my parents, but he wouldn’t stop talking. I finally get my mom on the phone (after calling the house phone where no one answered) and my mom plays it like she had no idea. We pull into our gate, and he tells me to get off the phone. I do exactly as he says, no questions asked. I run upstairs to find his family, my family, and all of our great friends in our home. It scared the living shit out of me, but it was the best surprise of my life!
What I found out at the party was Brian and Carrie were at the restaurant the entire time and the reason we were in the spotlight was so they could take pictures of the entire proposal. It was amazing!!!!
A few pictures of the engagement on 12.22.2012 (one day I will NEVER forget):
