Ediquette 101

I think it’s funny that there are different ways to use a knife and fork. There is the “proper way” (says my mom and dad) and then there is the “American way.” A lot of people don’t know there is a difference between the two.

American’s will cut their food with their knife and fork, put down the knife, switch the fork into their right hand, then proceed to eat.

The proper way is to keep the knife in the right hand and the fork in the left with the fork facing down when you eat and cut. For people that are right handed, it makes it a little more difficult. Just remember this when you go for a nice dinner out.

It’s the little things you notice when you are from another country. Enjoy!

  1. The "proper" way makes someone look like they're shoveling food into their mouth. I'll stick with the "American" way, thanks. ;-)

  2. The "American" way makes someone look too casual and uses the fork like a shovel. The "proper" way allows you to put down the fork to access your bread roll and eat slower. You see the English have the lead in lots of different ways of living! :)
